Created by Executive Chef Lynn Mansel, Mohegan Sun's culinary team, this year's gingerbread house incorporates approximately 6,525 gingerbread bricks, four 7-foot soldiers made out of milk chocolate and Rice Krispies®, man-made icing and white, dark and milk chocolate. Visitors of all ages can walk through the home to view the tiny rooms inside filled with a standout stone fireplace made from gingerbread and dark icing grout, chocolate stockings, a holiday tree, a chocolate rocking chair and a chocolate glass with assorted cookies for Santa to enjoy. Topping off the house is a cupola and weather vane with four chocolate chefs.
If you're taking your children, or grand-children, to see this Gingerbread house for the Holiday season, you don't have to include the casino parts for a fun afternoon. Check out the following itinerary:
1) Park in the Winter Garage and walk through the long walkway where interesting historical mini-exhibits show parts of Mohegan Tribal living. (I have always been amazed at the decor in this hallway.)
2) Did someone say "lunch?" - As you go down the escalator, you have two kid-friendly restaurants away from the slots - New Haven's famous Pepe's (pronounced Peh-pees) or Bobby Flay's Burger Palace (one of our faves). If you go to BBP, try the pistachio shake - they supposedly use real ground pistachios for flavor.
3) Continue left to where the shoppes are. That's where you will find the above mentioned Gingerbread House and other holiday displays.
4) OPTIONAL - Kids Quest at Mohegan Sun is the place to be for any child from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Kids can have an adventure of a lifetime in Barbieland, Construction Quarry, crawling through tunnels and tubes, climbing up ladders and spilling down chutes. Techno Quest, a state-of-the-art arcade, gives children the opportunity to play with top-of-the-line games from Sony, Sega, Nintendo and Microsoft at no additional charge. Check the website for price and supervision details.
5) Time for desert? - Ben & Jerry's continues on your left.
6) Time to go? - take the elevator up to the Hotel lobby, take a look at the decorations, continue out on the second floor to get a neat perspective of the shoppes & decorations. Take a right at the end of the escalator and out the way you came in. Voila! - a fun afternoon.
I hope you have a royal flush of happiness & joy spending time with your loved ones during this holiday season.
That's all for now.
