Virgil’s Real Barbeque To Open Inside Mohegan Sun

Famous BBQ Eatery opening this Spring
Barbeque lovers rejoice as Mohegan Sun announces a new addition to their restaurant offerings, Virgil’s Real BBQ, NYC’s original BBQ Restaurant since 1994. Virgil’s will be located on the upper level of The Shops concourse near The Lansdowne Irish Pub & Music House in the previous Big Bubba's BBQ. Virgil’s Real BBQ, which will have seating for 225, will boast something for everyone from comfort food favorites to regional cuisines to complement the famous smoked meats such as brisket, pulled pork and even some vegetarian dishes. This will be their third location with restaurants currently in New York City and in 2001, a 650-seat restaurant at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas.

ABOUT VIRGIL’S
Virgil’s fired up its pits and opened its doors in 1994 serving up traditional Southern barbecue and hospitality. Virgil’s smokes all their meats at a low temperature over indirect heat for up to ten hours with a unique mix of hickory, oak and fruit woods in order to impart the most flavor and keep the meat from drying out. To complement the main menu of BBQ specialties, Virgil’s also offers a generous selection of traditional sides like barbecue beans, coleslaw and cheese grits and Southern-style desserts like Banana Pudding and Key Lime Pie. To wash it all down, Virgil’s beer list features 16 beers on tap including Virgil’s own recipe lager brewed by Magic Hat Brewery in Burlington, Vermont. They are available by the glass or pint along with 75 varieties of bottled beers in every style to match any mood or plate.

Powerball Realities

You Can't Win If You Don't Play.......

Yes, that's true. Let's review some other "You can't....if You Don't......" sayings:
  1. "You Can't Win If You Don't Enter" (Still waiting for the balloons & GIGANTIC Check!)
  2. "You Can't Sit If You Want to be Fit" (True! I'm glad I found that saying sitting in my recliner!)
  3. "(If) You Can't Say Something Nice, Don't say ANYTHING AT ALL"
  4. "You Can't Complain If You Don't Vote" (Just think - If we had a $1 National Complaint Jar, We'd turn that deficit around in no time!)
  5. "You Can't Make Your Bed If You're a Tyrannosaurus Rex"(Ok, that's kinda off track, but pretty funny - trying picturing it)
So, today, POWERBALL is BIG! POWERBALL MANIA is out of control. (Really? I have to wait in line to pay cash for gas at Bin's Gas Station, Convenience Store, & Dry Cleaners?)

Well, it IS true - "You Can't Win If You Don't Play." So what chances do you have to win? Well, you have better odds in the following:
  • Birthing identical quadruplets - Odds: 13,000,000 to 1
  • Becoming an astronaut - Odds: 12,100,000 to 1
  • Becoming a movie star - Odds: 1,505,000 to 1
  • Getting a royal flush in a first hand of poker - Odds: 649,740 to 1
  • Finding a four leaf clover - Odds: 10,000 to 1
One more thing is TRUE - THE ODDS DON'T CHANGE! YOU DON'T HAVE A BETTER CHANCE IF MORE OR LESS PEOPLE BUY TICKETS, OR WHATEVER THE JACKPOT IS!
I heard this said on TV this morning, "You'd think the odds would be better to win at a low jackpot since less people are buying tickets..." OMG! That type of thinking is the same as looking for a cold slot - it's bound to hit. WOW Gambling sure brings out the "smarts" out in people.

Here's the facts:
  • There is a 1 in 175,223,510 chance of winning the jackpot, according to the website of the Multi-State Lottery Association.
  • There's a 1 in 31.85 chance that a ticket holder could win something, including the smallest prize of $4.
  • The pot is technically $320 million, but has a cash value after taxes of $193.8 million, according to the association.
Though sizable, tonight's pot pales in comparison with last year's $588 million Powerball jackpot. So, hey why bother. Afterall, most of us aren't even interested if the jackpot is only 8 digits!

So, it's true - You Can't Win If You Don't Play. Have fun with it, although, you're likelier to die getting struck by lightning than winning the Powerball jackpot: 1 in 134,906.

That's all for now. I have to rush down to Lotto Mart to buy "a" ticket.

Mohegan Sun has some shopping specials for the month of March with a hint of green for St. Patrick's Day:

  • The Old Farmer's Almanac General Store - LED Fiber Optic Angel - $40

  • The Lansdowne Irish PUb & Music House Corned Beef & Cabbage - $16
You can use your players club card points for these promos as well

SHINE 360

I always wondered what this was. I haven't tried it yet. So, what exactly is it?
It's a space where guests can experience the excitement of a “phygital” experience. Patented technology in the Shine 360° enables creation of one-of-a-kind 360 degree video, capturing each guest’s shining moment in the spotlight and instantly sharing it through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail. A growing trend in Europe, “phygital” marketing brings physical experiences to life in the digital world. You step inside and strike a pose as cameras capture a video of your shining moment. Guests enter Shine 360° and immediately are transformed into “digital celebrities” as 48 photos are simultaneously snapped in a circle around them. In seconds, the photos are seamlessly transformed into a 360-degree head-to-toe, back-to-front image. You can share your video with friends, or watch it again to relive your time in the spotlight.
Located in Casino of the Sky, across from the Arena Club entrance, this 24-foot wide installation captures users’ celebrity moments from every angle, creating a 360 video that they can immediately share with their social media ‘fans.’ There is no charge to use the booth; guests just need to be 21 years of age or older and be a Player’s Club member.

It's open every Friday & Saturday Night, 6pm to 2am

Finally, Congratulations.....
I like to concentrate on New England Gaming, but at this moment, I would like to look to AC and congratulate Jeff Hartman, previous President and Chief Executive Officer of Mohegan Sun from January 2011 until October 2012. I knew him through my career in education and his wonderful family, and through discussions about the PowerBonusing additions at the Sun.

Revel AC Inc. announced that it has appointed Mr. Hartmann as Revel AC’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approval. Jeff is a more than 20-year veteran of the gaming, hospitality and leisure industries, and possesses a solid understanding of Revel’s business, having worked with the Company on a consultancy basis since the beginning of 2013. I wish him and his family well, as well as Revel which seems to need a good person to bring it out of it's shaky beginning in AC.

That's all for now! Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Mass Casino Suitors Unusual Requirements Part 3

MASS GAMING WEBSITE, MOHEGAN SUN in PALMER and WAMPANOAG UPDATE

MassGaming.com - A Wealth of Information
The process that Massachusetts is going through can be somewhat bewildering. The confusion over sites and licenses, deadlines and political concerns can be rather frustrating, causing some us to patiently scream "Just build the damn things!"

Of course it's not so easy. There are so many personal, political, environmental, socio-economic, finacial, and transportation concerns to be considered, of course the process seems longer than it should be. But, we all know every must be left un-turned to issure the potential success and saftey of each property, because when it's built (unlike Las Vegas) it's there to stay!

The Massachusetts Gaming website at massgaming.com is a great resource for keeping track of all gambling in Massachusetts. It's quite extensive, but here are a few important sections to check out concerning the Casino process:
  • Community Caleandar - this lists the community events, meetings, and reports that are included in the requirement of all potential casino builders to rech out to the communities.
  • Live Streaming - watch live video of MassGaming's open public meetings. If you can't get to a meeting in Springfield, for example, it might be included in this live feed.
  • Licensing & Regulations - a little tough to get through, but very informative concerning the process.
  • Timeline - which established the approximate time frame for the licensing process for its Category 1 (resort casinos) licenses in regions A (Eastern MA) & B (Western MA). The status of Region C (Southeastern MA) is on hold until at least March 15, 2013.
VERY INFORMATIVE - Check it out!

Mohegan Sun unveiled a new name and brand for its Western Massachusetts casino endeavor: Mohegan Sun Massachusetts.
The new brand features a new logo, updated website, direct-mail newsletter, and social media functions.

Mohegan Sun is taking the rich railroad history of Palmer, Mass. and incorporating it into the new location’s brand. The logo features a signature railroad track motif and the history is highlighted in some of the architectural features of the new casino, which is to be built on 151 acres of land in Palmer.

“We wanted our logo and brand to reflect the great history of Palmer because the community has been so supportive and engaged,” says Mitchell Etess, chief executive office of the Mohegan Trial Gaming Authority.

Mohegan Sun has also announced a new event series: “Working At and Working With Mohegan Sun: A Community Conversation.” This project is designed to answer questions, provide extensive employment information, and establish vendor relationships with the casino giant.

The new northwest Massachusetts location will create over 2,000 new jobs in a variety of fields. Etess explains that Mohegan Sun Massachusetts will, “deliver jobs, revenue, economic growth and memorable experiences for visitors from all over the Northeast – and from every corner of the Commonwealth.”

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Update
With regulators on the cusp of opening up the southeast region of the state to commercial casino developers, Gov. Deval Patrick and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe have a “framework” of a compact they plan to show federal officials in the hopes of avoiding another rejection, according to the governor.

“We’re in negotiations,” Patrick told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ve got a model we’re trying to work through with the tribe, and we have a hope – I think it’s either by the end of this week or early next week – to be able to go down to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and show them the framework so that we can get some preliminary feedback from them and we don’t go through the process we did the last time of thinking we had a deal that was going to satisfy them. It’s hard.”

The Mashpee are hoping to build a resort casino in a Taunton office park. In December, the Gaming Commission tabled discussion of whether to start the licensure process for other, commercial developers in the southeast region, giving the tribe until March 15 to show progress has been made in securing the necessary land-in-trust agreement from the federal government and on the compact. The commission plans to revisit the discussion at its Thursday, March 21 meeting, the first after the deadline.

So much happening - So little time!     That's all for now.

Tomorrow is back to "Sun" Sundays!

Foxwoods Friday

Foxwoods Tanger Outlet Project's Groundbreaking Delayed by Winter Weather
Harsh weather has delayed the start of construction for the outlet mall developers plan to build at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Groundbreaking had been expected by the end of last month.

"We didn't break ground in February due to hard winter conditions," the source said. "We had a historical snowstorm and the ground is still snow-covered."

Barring anything else unforeseen, groundbreaking will take place this spring, and the mall, which will connect Foxwoods' Grand Pequot Hotel and MGM Grand at Foxwoods, will supposedly open in the summer of 2014.

"Archeological investigations at the site have been completed successfully. Borings have been completed," a source said. "This project is now shovel ready. We're just waiting for better weather."

The mall project, first announced in February 2012, is being developed by Tanger Factory Outlet Centers of Greensboro, N.C., and Gordon Group Holdings of Greenwich, a partnership that also will own and manage the facility.

State economists last year hailed the project as a potential boon to southeastern Connecticut's economy, providing 400 temporary constructions jobs and about 900 permanent full- and part-time jobs once it's built.

When the project was unveiled last year in connection with Foxwoods' 20th anniversary, groundbreaking was supposed to take place in the spring of 2012. The year's delay since then is partially attributable to Tanger's needing additional time to reach deals with mall tenants, according to the source. The 312,000-square-foot mall, Tanger Outlets Foxwoods, will include some 80 stores. However, none of the mall's stores has yet been named. According to documents available on its website, the company's tenant base includes about 400 upscale brands, including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, J. Crew, Nike and Polo Ralph Lauren.

Fiscal Cliff and New England Casinos

The Fiscal Cliff looms as New England Casinos already try to regain financial momentum, especially Connecticut casinos. Travel expenses will cut into available bankrolls, general funds for recreation will be diminished, and players will be forced to stay closer to home. Let's look at each states possible consequences:

MAINE - This may cause less of an increase in revenue for the two competing casinos (-) but many from the Pine Tree state may not be traveling elsewhere (CT, RI) to play (+). Maine Casinos could see the smallest decrease.

MASSACHUSETTS - Sending the economy over the fiscal cliff could cost Massachusetts more jobs than have been created in the past year(-). Jobs created by for the future casinos will be different from the jobs lost.job. These losses would be felt particularly in the state’s high-tech sector, where high-paying jobs in research and development would disappear. Moody’s Analytics, a forecasting firm in West Chester, Pa., predicted that the combination of tax increases and spending cuts would cost Massachusetts 74,000 jobs. “That is a huge job loss,” Clayton-Matthews said.(-) The change in jobs may cause the legislature to drag their feet in casino selection and postpone the decision to continue the process. Also, the players involved in getting licenced in Massachusetts (MGM, Caesar's, Wynn, Mohegan Sun) may get cold feet if the state seems to be more of a "gamble" for success.(-)

RHODE ISLAND - A decrease in available luxury spending may keep the Ocean State's faithful home, even in Newport! But their proximity to CT might not change where they gamble, just how much.(-)

CONNECTICUT - With both casinos having layoffs, and dealing with declining revenues over the last three quarters, the Nutmeg State may feel it the most. (--) New York still looms big, enticing CT's gamblers. And Rhode Island's Twin River continues to work on not only keeping it's players at home, teasing CT gamblers and working on future prospects and a base of clients in Massachusetts before their casinos are up and running. The future seems rather difficult for the Sun & Foxwoods, although they continue to try different promotions, add shopping outlets and continue to offer the best concert talent of all northeast casinos.

Economists predict.Casinos nationwide could see their profits fall by as much as 10 percent if Congress and the White House fail to reach agreement to avoid a budget crisis, a top credit ratings agency warned Monday. Moody’s Investors Service said the gambling industry would be particularly vulnerable if Washington’s budget negotiations falter, leading to a series of spending cuts and tax increases that could harm consumer confidence and drive the country over the “fiscal cliff.”

“The gaming sector’s economic health depends entirely on customers’ discretionary spending habits,” Moody’s noted in a research report. “Even as the severe downturn during 2008-09 has faded, U.S. consumers remain under pressure from weak growth in their disposable personal incomes, as well as increasing living expenses. Any further drop in consumer confidence would keep even more potential gaming customers from spending their money at casinos.” Moody’s predicted that casino operating profits could decline between 5 percent and 10 percent if wary gamblers stay home. Atlantic City’s casinos, already suffering in the fragile economy, have seen their gambling revenue sink 8 percent in the first 11 months this year!

Let's not forget hurricane Sandy that closed casinos in the northeast. Casinos are expected to take months to fully recover from the storm. Collectively, Atlantic City’s 12 casino hotels lost an estimated $5 million in gambling revenue each day they were closed in the hurricane’s aftermath.

Dear legislators, please do your job. We have enough economic "royal " pains to deal with.

What are your Casino New Year's Resolutions?

Do people really make resolutions and stick to them? C'mon now - really?

I think we as human beings make resolutions on January 1st with all good intentions. I really do! They represent hope - change for the better - forward improvement. Whether we follow them or not, they represent what we think are important changes to make as individuals and as a society.

So resolutions are good, right? Let's look at some gambling resolutions for the new year:

1) I will stay withing my Bankroll! Know what you can spend. If you have a winning session, great! If not, stick to your limit. If losses approach the amount you're willing to spend, slow down. Take a timeout, get a snack - people watch! If you hit your limit, it's time to stop

2) I won't bother people near me - I will respect other players space and focus. Instead of bothering others, I will do my own homework and learn the games myself.

3) I will learn the games before I play: A little homework goes a long way in helping to cut the odds against you at casino games. Learn basic strategy in blackjack and for each video poker game you play. Know the rules and best bets in craps. No matter your game of choice, buy a good book and read about the best methods of play.

4) I will keep part of my winnings: Your winnings aren't "their money." As soon as you've won it, it's yours, and you don't have to give it back. On any sizable win, put at least half of it away. You can buy yourself a treat, go out for an evening on the town, put a little away for the kids' or grandkids' educations, pay bills --- whatever you want.

5) I will keep track of my gambling. Keeping track of stats such as time spent, casinos visited, promotions used, money won/lost, etc...will force you to look at your gaming experiences. Patterns of losing play, or machines played, may indicate that changes are needed.

6) I will play only with money I can afford to lose: When the losses come, make sure you don't have money earmarked for food, clothing, school, the rent or mortgage on the line. Play with money budgeted for entertainment, not for life's necessities.

7) I will never chase losses: What's worse than losing money? Losing even more in a desperate attempt to win it back. You're never "due" to win, and wins and losses don't have to even out in the time we play. A losing streak means it's time to ease back or quit, not bet more.

8) I will never use credit card cash advances for gambling money: Think the house edge is high on some games? Try comparing it to credit card interest rates. The house edge added to interest on borrowed money and ATM fees --- that's a tough combination to overcome.

9) I will go easy on the alcohol: If you want to have a drink while you play, that's your business. You don't want your judgment impaired with money on the line. Have a good time, but keep a clear head, too.

10) I will keep perspective and play for fun: Keep perspective and play for fun. Gambling in a casino is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Only a handful of blackjack and video poker players have the skill, discipline and bankroll to enable them to make money in the long run. Most of us will lose more than we win at any game. Most players are best off to treat losses as the price of admission for a day's entertainment. Casino gambling is a form of entertainment, a way to have a good time. On those days when we take a little extra cash home, so much the better. But even a losing day can be fun if you keep your expectations realistic.

11) I will pay attention to my TITO payments.Be careful with your money. There are people out there who look to take other players money, TITO vouchers (TITO = Ticket In, Ticket Out) purses and more. That's their job! Be careful out there

12) I will be more aware of my Rewards Account. Remember, all rewards clubs have different rules. 1 point in one club equals $1, but other clubs have 100 points equaling $1. And be aware of when your points expire.

I'm sure there are more. Whatever your resolutions may be, I hope you keep them as long as possible. I hope your New year is a prosperous one - make 2013 the best gaming experience yet. Get that royal!

That's all for now

New Slots Expected at Foxwoods
Looks like the slots manufacturers have been busy.  The following include some new interesting slots you should find in December and to enter in the new year:
1) "Cheers" - a slot where everybody knows your name!  Lots of bonus and mini-bonus features with clips from the sitcom.
2) "Kiss" slots - from the high-heeled metal band.  Another theme slot with multi-array games, original game mechanics and a rockin’ soundtrack.
3) Aristocrat Gaming introduces three new slots - "Cashman Alive," Tarzan-Lord of the Jungle" and "Tarzan - The adventures Return"

$5 Burger Days at David Burke Prime
Where to find the best burger at Foxwoods? According to Connecticut magazine, it's at David Burke Prime. And on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you can get our famous, juicy, 28-day dry-aged burger for only $5. For a few dollars more you can add a salad or french fries. But any way you bite it, it's not just the best burger at the casino, it's the best bargain, too. Thursday, Friday and Saturday only 12pm – 4pm. Call 860-312-8753 for reservations.

Looking for other things to do at Foxwoods?
Try some modest shopping on the concourse; be tempted tby Native American artifacts, men’s and women’s clothing and athletic gear, shoes, purses, and jewelry.
For a literal breath of fresh air, a 1.9-mile trail leads through the woods to the Mashantucket Museum & Research Center (Wed-Sat 9 a.m.-5 p.m., adults $15, 55 and up $13, 6-15 $10) where exhibits detail the natural history of the area as well as the history and culture of the nation that owns the casino. There is also a shuttle bus between the casino and the museum.
If it's a walk inside you're looking for after that big buffet, try a walk from the farthest end of Foxwoods all the way to MGM and back.  You might want to reward yourself with either Junior's Cheesecake on your way back or stop in at Gelato Cafe and treat your sweet tooth to the silky, smooth, luscious flavors of handcrafted Italian-style ice cream – 24 flavors to be exact.
Then, you might have to do that power walk all over again!  Yummm....

That's all for now.  I say royal, you say _____! (Louder)   I say royal, you say _____!   Nice!

Tuesday Tidbits

Random stuff concerning New England Gambling, US Gambling, and gambling in general.

  • In this year’s election news, the biggest election-day casino issue was in Maryland which approved the addition of table games at its casinos, including a sixth resort that will be built near Washington D.C. As we remember in New England, table games were also approved for Rhode Island’s Twin River slot parlor, but were declined for the Newport Grand. And, a measure to escalate a casino presence in Oregon was defeated.

  • Ever get "free slot play?" Ever play just the free slot play, then leave? Well, consider this.  Whatever your playing status (card tier) is - low, mid to high roller status - casino management looks at all of your play statistics - time played, denomination, bet amount, games - high or low house advantage - and time away (for example, Mohegan Sun looks at last 6 visits). If your "free slot play" only visit isn't incorporated in your usual amount of play, it may decrease your perks and your tier-status. Something to keep in mind on those days you go to eat and play your free slot play and leave, damaging your player rating!  Not that I would know, I mean, so I've heard.....

  • Frank Scoblete, well known gambling author and teacher, gives the following suggestions about protecting your money in a casino - Men should never keep their wallets in their back pockets. Get a shirt with a pocket in front that buttons and keep your money in there. Some savvy craps players even keep a “dummy” wallet in their back pockets.  Women should never put your purse on the floor, or on the drink shelf that surrounds the craps table at thigh level, or between slot machines. Doing so is an invitation to long-armed thieves. Keep your purse wrapped securely around your shoulder, on your lap covered by your arm, or keep it in your hands. The bottom line is to make the thief realize that it is going to take quite an effort to dislodge you from your purse. Both sexes can protect their money by using a secure fanny pack or waist pack.

You can find more of Frank’s teachings at his site http://www.gamblingteachers.com.

  • Promotion - Shop & Dine Anywhere at Mohegan Sun w/ a $25 Gift Card and $15 in Free Slot Play for $25 ($40 Value) Limit 1 per person, per Player's Club card. Voucher expires December 31, 2012. From ReferLocal. http://tinyurl.com/b76kqym

  • A Doctor Poker Player - A doctor answers his phone and hears the familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line. "We need a fourth for poker," said the friend. "I'll be right over," whispered the doctor. As he was putting on his coat, his wife asked, "Is it serious?" "Oh yes, quite serious," said the doctor gravely. "In fact, there are three doctors there already!"

  • Finally, a Casino Myth from Frank Scoblete:   Casinos are not interested in low rollers. To get comps, you have to bet big money.   If you play the machines, even for quarters, you aren’t as low a roller as you think you are. Put three quarters in a machine every five seconds and you are putting through $540 per hour. Play four hours and you just gambled $2,160 -- wow! The casinos will be more than happy to recognize such action with free or discounted rooms, meals and other special promotions. If you play table games, you might not want to be a five-dollar bettor looking for comps in a casino where they only rate $25 action. However, there are plenty of casinos that will gladly comp five-dollar players if they play long enough. The bottom line is this: Most casinos want just about all players. Find the places that give your action the most in perks as possible...and then patronize them.

That's all for now.  A-K-Q-J-10 all diamonds.  Diamonds aren't just a girl's best friend!

Maine Monday

MAINE CASINOS

HOLLYWOOD CASINO, HOTEL & RACEWAY
NEWS
They'll soon be rolling the dice at the Hollywood Casino in Bangor, Maine.

AP reports that the casino is adding craps to its offering of gambling options beginning Friday. The casino has had slot machines since it opened as Maine's first casino in 2005, and added blackjack, poker and roulette earlier this year. General Manager John Osborne says customers have been asking that craps be added to the mix, but the casino doesn't have enough craps dealers for the table to operate daily. That could change next year after a new round of table games operators completes training courses at Eastern Maine Community College.

Craps will officially debut at 5 p.m. Friday and will be open to play from 5 p.m. to closing on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hollywood also expects this to be the best year ever as they continue to offer new table games. As of now, they offer Poker, Blackjack, 3 card poker, Texas Hold 'em, and Roulette. After a slight dip in revenue last year, they expect to be more than 3 million more than last year.

HOLLYWOOD PROMOTIONS
  • WIN Free Slot Play - December 22  - Don't miss out on the first four Saturdays of December for your chance to win! OXFORD CASINO
Meanwhile, The Oxford Casino in Maine is on the verge of receiving final approval from the state’s Gambling Control Board for an expanded gambling area in the casino. While the final decision hasn’t been meted down yet, the casino is optimistic that he approval will pass, allowing it to add more table games and slot machines on the casino floor to add to the current gambling options – 529 slot machines and 12 table games – the Oxford Casino already has in its fold.

That's all for now.  May all your flushes be royal.

Casino News in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Round-up

The process for three / four casino sites in Massachusetts continues, although to some, at a snail's pace. The winner of a lone casino license in Western Massachusetts will be determined on merit to the company that can best deliver on its promises.

Below is part of an article by Howard Stutz's Inside Gaming column  which appears Sundays in the Las Vegas Review Journal.  He blogs at lvrj.com/blogs/stutz. Follow @howardstutz on Twitter.

"A month ago, Penn National and MGM Resorts spent a combined $90 million and were on opposite sides of what might have been the most expensive and venomous casino expansion campaign ever seen in Maryland.  What MGM and Penn need to avoid is another Maryland, where Question 7 passed by a 52 percent to 48 percent vote. MGM Resorts, which supported the gaming expansion measure, is expected to be awarded a license to build a casino in suburban Maryland.  Penn National opposed the measure because the company believed it should be awarded the gaming license. Also, a new casino in Maryland would take customers from the company's West Virginia casino.  Did MGM cross the line?  Inundating the Springfield airwaves with millions of dollars in ads, mailing controversial documents to residents and questioning a company's financial acumen or intentions won't be tolerated.  In fact, Springfield leaders reportedly told officials from both MGM and Penn to play nice.

But for the moment, the focus is now on MGM Resorts and Penn National.

Now, they are facing off in Western Massachusetts in what is the most heavily sought after license among the state's three potential gaming regions. Western Massachusetts drew six prospects. Both MGM and Penn have made inroads in Springfield. MGM promises to refurbish a city playground near its casino site and to use the gaming facility to bring additional business to two municipal golf courses.  MGM Resorts and Penn National are focused on Springfield, which bills itself as a cultural center.  MGM Resorts is planning an $800 million casino on 10 to 15 acres at the city's south side. Penn National wants to build an $807 million casino on the city's north end.  Also on the table are separate proposals from two local developers in the town of Holyoke and a pitch by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, operators of the Mohegan Sun Casino, which has a site in Palmer.

In the other areas of the state, Caesars Entertainment Corp. - in partnership with the Suffolk Downs Raceway - seemingly has a lock on the Boston-area license, although a late entry of Wynn Resorts Ltd. could muddy the waters.  And, in the southeast, the license appears headed to a Massachusetts Indian tribe, though the process could reopen if the tribe can't get it's financing in order.

Hundreds of Springfield residents are expected to pack a public meeting to hear from two companies seeking to build casinos in the western Massachusetts city.  MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming Inc. were scheduled to make presentations and take questions at the meeting on Tuesday night.
Mayor Domenic Sarno is expected to decide sometime early next year whether to negotiate a host community agreement with one or both of the remaining developers."

So the Bay State battles for casinos has begun.  The expected completion is sometime around 2016.  I guess we'll have plenty of news until then.  I'll try to keep you posted we journey through.  That's all for now.

More Mass Casino News

Let the courtships begin!

NECN says it's not quite like David & Goliath, but I do think it's close. It would be a similar situation if Boyd took on MGM for a particular important property on the strip - Boyd Gaming being very similar to Penn in it's diverse properties. One has the Vegas glitz - and the name, MGM, a Fortune 500 company with 62,000 employees. The other is from Pennsylvania, called Penn National Gaming which has opened 3 new casinos this year. Its proposal is called Hollywood Springfield, similar to the Hollywood Hotel, Casino & Raceway in Bangor, Maine. Hollywood Springfield would be a more grand scale, I would believe. A little closer look at the two proposals follows:

Penn National has 24 casinos in the United States, so it is not quite David to MGM's Goliath. Penn National and local partner Peter A. Picknelly, chairman and CEO of Peter Pan Bus Lines, propose a resort casino and hotel on 13.4 acres in the North End, which includes bus company property. Penn National said Tuesday it wants to include regionally-themed restaurants, including a sports bar involving retired quarterback Doug Flutie.

MGM Resorts International proposes a resort casino, hotel and entertainment complex on a 10-block site downtown. MGM said it would include retail shops and apartments, and take advantage of existing tourism spots in Springfield to compete with the entertainment complexes of Connecticut casinos. MGM also said its project would create thousands of new jobs.

The Request for Proposals is due Jan. 3. The city has a month to review, and it will then likely be put on a ballot. Mayor Domenic Sarno is expected to decide early next year whether to negotiate a host community agreement with one or both of the developers.

And remember, a casino isn't coming to Springfield for certain - there are other bids too in Holyoke and Palmer. The company that emerges from the Springfield competition will likely have to compete locally with Uncasville, Conn., casino company Mohegan Sun, which is seeking a resort casino in the town of Palmer.  Recently, the Mayor of Holyoke rescinded his intentions for the casino consideration.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will make the final decision on the western Massachusetts operating license, one of three regional licenses allowed under the state's year-old casino law.  With Ameristar pulling out in Springfield, and Holyoke seemingly not interested, the numbers are dwindling.

My crystal ball tells me the following prediction.  The three casinos will be (drum roll).....
  1. Wampanoag Tribe in the Southeast area - while others are being permitted to submit bids again, the Wampanoags will get there act together and get the bid
  2. Caesar's(Harrah's) in Boston area - rumor has it, it's the leader by far, even with Steve Wynn's late presence
  3. MGM in the western area - those voting will not see past MGM's reputation and money, leaving Penn National left out.  Mohegan Sun has a great spot in place that needs economic development, but I think the powers to be would prefer Springfield to Palmer - it's just "glitzier."

That's all for now. May all your flushes be royal.

Maine Mondays

MAINE

Oxford Casino
OXFORD — Executives with the Oxford Casino say they havetaken in more than $30 million in net revenues in the six months since thefacility opened, but expansion plans remain in limbo.  General Manager and Vice President Jack Sourssaid there are no immediate plans to expand, but the casino would eventuallylike to build a hotel to attract overnight visitors and not just day-trippers.  Sours tells the Sun Journal that the casinoalso has to take into account planned expanded gambling opportunities in NewHampshire and Massachusetts.  The casinohas resulted in nearly $13 million in tax revenue to the state.
An expansion that opened in September bumped the numberof slot machines from 529 to 819. The number of table games increased from 12to 22.

Hollywood Casino
BANGOR, Maine — In spite of its new competition to thesouth and a drop in the take from slot machines, Bangor’s Hollywood Casino ispoised to surpass its revenue totals from last year, a feat managementattributes to new offerings at the facility and marketing aimed at neighbors tothe north.
The casino’s 923 slot machines are bringing in less thanthey did in previous years, with slot revenue dipping below $4 million for thefirst time since 2008. In November, the slots netted less than $3.8 million.  But Hollywood Casino has a new set ofattractions that are closing the gap, according to General Manager JohnOsborne.
“Table-game revenue has really had some traction …,”Osborne said in a phone interview. “In most months, it replaced the loss ofslot revenue.”  The table games, including blackjack, roulette, Lucky Ladies, and several poker variants, havebrought in $5.9 million since they opened in March. The addition led thefacility to change its name from Hollywood Slots to Hollywood Casino, as wellas cut about 80 slot machines from the facility to make room for 16 tablegames.
“We see table games getting stronger yet in 2013,”Osborne said, explaining that the casino is adding a craps table this month.
With its new competition from Oxford Casino just a120-mile drive down I-95, Hollywood Casino has been trying to keep up its patronageby looking to the north.  General ManagerJohn Osborne said the number of visitors coming from southern parts of thestate has “slowed down a bit” in recent years, but that more people from Canadaand northern Maine are making the trip to Bangor.  In years past, Canadian visitors accountedfor 3 percent or 4 percent of casino revenue, according to Osborne; this year, however, they are contributing more than 10 percent.
Hollywood Casino is owned by Penn National Gaming, whichoperates 29 gaming and hotel facilities across the country.

That's all for now.  Short and royally sweet.
