Fiscal Cliff and New England Casinos

The Fiscal Cliff looms as New England Casinos already try to regain financial momentum, especially Connecticut casinos. Travel expenses will cut into available bankrolls, general funds for recreation will be diminished, and players will be forced to stay closer to home. Let's look at each states possible consequences:

MAINE - This may cause less of an increase in revenue for the two competing casinos (-) but many from the Pine Tree state may not be traveling elsewhere (CT, RI) to play (+). Maine Casinos could see the smallest decrease.

MASSACHUSETTS - Sending the economy over the fiscal cliff could cost Massachusetts more jobs than have been created in the past year(-). Jobs created by for the future casinos will be different from the jobs lost.job. These losses would be felt particularly in the state’s high-tech sector, where high-paying jobs in research and development would disappear. Moody’s Analytics, a forecasting firm in West Chester, Pa., predicted that the combination of tax increases and spending cuts would cost Massachusetts 74,000 jobs. “That is a huge job loss,” Clayton-Matthews said.(-) The change in jobs may cause the legislature to drag their feet in casino selection and postpone the decision to continue the process. Also, the players involved in getting licenced in Massachusetts (MGM, Caesar's, Wynn, Mohegan Sun) may get cold feet if the state seems to be more of a "gamble" for success.(-)

RHODE ISLAND - A decrease in available luxury spending may keep the Ocean State's faithful home, even in Newport! But their proximity to CT might not change where they gamble, just how much.(-)

CONNECTICUT - With both casinos having layoffs, and dealing with declining revenues over the last three quarters, the Nutmeg State may feel it the most. (--) New York still looms big, enticing CT's gamblers. And Rhode Island's Twin River continues to work on not only keeping it's players at home, teasing CT gamblers and working on future prospects and a base of clients in Massachusetts before their casinos are up and running. The future seems rather difficult for the Sun & Foxwoods, although they continue to try different promotions, add shopping outlets and continue to offer the best concert talent of all northeast casinos.

Economists predict.Casinos nationwide could see their profits fall by as much as 10 percent if Congress and the White House fail to reach agreement to avoid a budget crisis, a top credit ratings agency warned Monday. Moody’s Investors Service said the gambling industry would be particularly vulnerable if Washington’s budget negotiations falter, leading to a series of spending cuts and tax increases that could harm consumer confidence and drive the country over the “fiscal cliff.”

“The gaming sector’s economic health depends entirely on customers’ discretionary spending habits,” Moody’s noted in a research report. “Even as the severe downturn during 2008-09 has faded, U.S. consumers remain under pressure from weak growth in their disposable personal incomes, as well as increasing living expenses. Any further drop in consumer confidence would keep even more potential gaming customers from spending their money at casinos.” Moody’s predicted that casino operating profits could decline between 5 percent and 10 percent if wary gamblers stay home. Atlantic City’s casinos, already suffering in the fragile economy, have seen their gambling revenue sink 8 percent in the first 11 months this year!

Let's not forget hurricane Sandy that closed casinos in the northeast. Casinos are expected to take months to fully recover from the storm. Collectively, Atlantic City’s 12 casino hotels lost an estimated $5 million in gambling revenue each day they were closed in the hurricane’s aftermath.

Dear legislators, please do your job. We have enough economic "royal " pains to deal with.

What are your Casino New Year's Resolutions?

Do people really make resolutions and stick to them? C'mon now - really?

I think we as human beings make resolutions on January 1st with all good intentions. I really do! They represent hope - change for the better - forward improvement. Whether we follow them or not, they represent what we think are important changes to make as individuals and as a society.

So resolutions are good, right? Let's look at some gambling resolutions for the new year:

1) I will stay withing my Bankroll! Know what you can spend. If you have a winning session, great! If not, stick to your limit. If losses approach the amount you're willing to spend, slow down. Take a timeout, get a snack - people watch! If you hit your limit, it's time to stop

2) I won't bother people near me - I will respect other players space and focus. Instead of bothering others, I will do my own homework and learn the games myself.

3) I will learn the games before I play: A little homework goes a long way in helping to cut the odds against you at casino games. Learn basic strategy in blackjack and for each video poker game you play. Know the rules and best bets in craps. No matter your game of choice, buy a good book and read about the best methods of play.

4) I will keep part of my winnings: Your winnings aren't "their money." As soon as you've won it, it's yours, and you don't have to give it back. On any sizable win, put at least half of it away. You can buy yourself a treat, go out for an evening on the town, put a little away for the kids' or grandkids' educations, pay bills --- whatever you want.

5) I will keep track of my gambling. Keeping track of stats such as time spent, casinos visited, promotions used, money won/lost, etc...will force you to look at your gaming experiences. Patterns of losing play, or machines played, may indicate that changes are needed.

6) I will play only with money I can afford to lose: When the losses come, make sure you don't have money earmarked for food, clothing, school, the rent or mortgage on the line. Play with money budgeted for entertainment, not for life's necessities.

7) I will never chase losses: What's worse than losing money? Losing even more in a desperate attempt to win it back. You're never "due" to win, and wins and losses don't have to even out in the time we play. A losing streak means it's time to ease back or quit, not bet more.

8) I will never use credit card cash advances for gambling money: Think the house edge is high on some games? Try comparing it to credit card interest rates. The house edge added to interest on borrowed money and ATM fees --- that's a tough combination to overcome.

9) I will go easy on the alcohol: If you want to have a drink while you play, that's your business. You don't want your judgment impaired with money on the line. Have a good time, but keep a clear head, too.

10) I will keep perspective and play for fun: Keep perspective and play for fun. Gambling in a casino is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Only a handful of blackjack and video poker players have the skill, discipline and bankroll to enable them to make money in the long run. Most of us will lose more than we win at any game. Most players are best off to treat losses as the price of admission for a day's entertainment. Casino gambling is a form of entertainment, a way to have a good time. On those days when we take a little extra cash home, so much the better. But even a losing day can be fun if you keep your expectations realistic.

11) I will pay attention to my TITO payments.Be careful with your money. There are people out there who look to take other players money, TITO vouchers (TITO = Ticket In, Ticket Out) purses and more. That's their job! Be careful out there

12) I will be more aware of my Rewards Account. Remember, all rewards clubs have different rules. 1 point in one club equals $1, but other clubs have 100 points equaling $1. And be aware of when your points expire.

I'm sure there are more. Whatever your resolutions may be, I hope you keep them as long as possible. I hope your New year is a prosperous one - make 2013 the best gaming experience yet. Get that royal!

That's all for now

(Feature) What Tomb Raider Can Learn From Far Cry 3

Tomb Raider is looking to be a fantastic revival of a dying series, however with still a good few months to go until release, here is a list of things which I think the upcoming title can learn from an already released gem of a similar genre: Far Cry 3.

Gameplay is key

Tomb Raider showed off some interesting game mechanics at the last E3 and while it certainly intrigued it also looked a little wobbly. Something Far Cry 3 did was it sustained the same highly intense and similar combat situations while making them constantly fun, no matter how familiar they felt.

Going from stronghold to stronghold then completing a few missions was never a bore or a chore in FC3 simply because deeper than usual gameplay mechanics and a variation between stealth and action kept it interesting.

I'm not saying Tomb Raider should copy Far Cry 3's style; it just has to make sure the gameplay is varied, deep and interesting enough to keep people, not just playing, but also constantly having fun - something many games fail to do.

Tomb Raider is looking a much different game from previous installments in the series and while change is good - especially for a revival game - Crystal Dynamics must not forget that old fans will still make up a large part of the audience so familiarity is also required in some aspects.

Story can make or break

Tomb Raider promises an outstanding, emotional story - and it better deliver. If it doesn't the game will suffer. Far Cry 3 is proof of this. While FC3 offered a great story and adventure it wasn't told to its full potential. Some characters weren't used enough or expanded on enough and it felt a little hollow towards the end and overall it did suffer as a result.

To fully succeed Tomb Raider must ensure it tells its story to the max. Don't do what Far Cry 3 did and hold back on characters or any of that rubbish; give us something to play for, abuse that story, make players sad - whatever it is: DO IT. The games success may depend on it.

A world worth exploring

Like Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider will be a mostly sandbox game. Being free to explore is fine and everything, but only if the environment offered is actually interesting.

Far Cry 3 hit the nail on the head with its game world. It actually reminded me of Tomb Raider/Uncharted at times. There were caves to explore, animals to hunt, jungles to learn and constant obstacles between you and your goal.

Tomb Raider has to have an intriguing, unique and awesome game world that will have players exploring because they want to, not because they have to.

A key thing FC3 did was it had a world full of secrets. I remember playing through the game and on the way to an objective there was a massive stone pit. I went down and it was full of snakes and treasure. There was a hole full of scary looking water that I was terrified to go in because of crocodiles or something. I struggled to find my way out again until I finally found a hidden vine to climb up.

That one, small, five minute long section is a great definition of why Far Cry 3 had such an awesome world. It wasn't just roads and trees; it had secrets, places to explore and things to gather and learn. If anything, the only thing its world lacked was more of the same, great stuff its world offered.

If Tomb Raider does what a fair amount of mediocre game worlds do and simply offers players a map with some collectibles in it and some interesting landscapes, it won't be worth playing and it might as well be completely scripted instead.

This is particularly essential because Tomb Raider, as a series, has always been about the fantastic places Lara goes to explore and the awesome things she (and the player) discover there.

Don't let us down...

This is the most important thing, Crystal Dynamics, OK? Do what Far Cry 3 did. Hype us up, like you are. Get us totally psyched. And then, when we play it, don't, I repeat don't, let us down. If you can deliver as awesome a game as we expect and hope for, then Tomb Raider may be in the running for Game of The Year 2013.

So, please, don't let us down.

Rhody, Mass & Sun News

The Providence Journal Reports....

A hiring spurt is coming as the RI Lottery moves into new the role as casino operator. A consultant has advised the state Lottery to hire 30 to 35 additional staffers to operate and regulate Rhode Island's first full-fledged casino when table games come to Twin River this summer. The hiring would increase by at least 60 percent the number of state employees working for the Lott, at an anticipated new cost of $1.2 million in salaries and benefits this year, $3.95 million next year. That does not include the six to eight detectives that Col. Steven G. O'Donnell, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, plans to assign to a new "casino unit" at Twin River to ensure "the integrity of the games." In case you've never visited, Twin River Casino is now home to more than 4,750 electronic-gambling machines. Voters last month approved the addition of "state-operated casino gaming'' at the privately owned Twin River. Remember, it's only ten minutes from Providence and 45 minutes from Boston.

Taunton voters strongly approve casino proposal

The Taunton Gazette recently reported that after the ballots were tallied Saturday night, Taunton voters paved the way for a casino to come to town, a prospect that many city leaders say could revitalize the city’s slumping economy. Voters heading to the polls to weigh in on the nonbinding referendum endorsed the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe’s proposal to build a tribal casino in East Taunton, with 7,693 voting for the plan and 4,571 opposing it.

“We thank the people of the great city of Taunton for their support,” Mashpee Wampanoag Chairman Cedric Cromwell said in a statement. “We are overwhelmed by this resounding victory in Taunton, especially in comparison to the recent rejection of gaming in Foxboro and other neighboring communities. But let’s be clear, this is not just a victory for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe; this is a victory for the future of this city, for every person looking for a good job, and for the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts.” The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe announced in February that it is pursuing a destination resort casino in East Taunton and has acquired an option to purchase 146 acres in Liberty and Union Industrial Park. The Mashpee have not publicly ruled out acquiring additional land, including the nearby Silver City Galleria mall. The Mashpee Wampanoag propose to build their Taunton casino over a five-year period in phases at a cost of more than $500 million. They have said the project will include a 150,000-square-foot casino, restaurants, 10 to 15 retail shops, three 300-room hotels, an event center, a four-deck parking garage and a water park.

That's all for now.  Have a Royal Weekend.

JokeTime:
Q: What did the dealer say to the deck of cards?
A: "I can’t deal with you anymore."

Top-10 things that make a good casino dealer

Gary Trask wrote an article in the ezine POKERZONE about five years ago. Whatever side of the table you're on, here are some things to be aware of:

10 . Knowledge of the rules
Knowing and understanding the rules of the game you are dealing is obviously very important, everything needs to be second nature. You don't want dealers who are unsure of themselves. If the dealer doesn't know the rules it can ruin the integrity of the game, it's all about basic fundamentals.
9. Keep the game moving
You've got to be crisp and keep the game controlled and you have to move the game along with no unnecessary stoppages in play. But at the same time you don't want to rush yourself or rush the players. You've got to find the right balance.
8. Mechanical skills
Dealers should be taught to riffle the cards tight and smooth. You can't raise the cards too high or somebody at the table could see something that could give them an unfair advantage." Dealing the cards is an art form. You want to dealers to put their own kind of body language and personality into it. It's what makes each dealer unique, but it's also probably the most difficult thing to teach.
7. Be consistent
"If a dealer uses a certain style, the player will get used to that style," says Levin. "Once the player gets used to that style, you can't change it up on them. Like I said before, every dealer has his or her own technique. Players like familiarity and by being consistent you help the player get comfortable." \6. Professionalism
A dealer's appearance is important and they want to practice good posture, as well as remembering that the dealer should never point at a player – they should always use an open hand – and they should never stare at the player. It's just common courtesy.
5. Know when it's appropriate to help a player
It's perfectly fine for the dealer to help a player when it looks like they need it, but the dealer isn't there to play the hand for the player. All of the casinos have different philosophies about this, but the general rule is to help when help is needed, but don't disrupt the flow of the game because you are coming to the aid of one player at the table more often than you should be.
4. Restraint
Sometimes the player doesn't always act appropriately and for the sake of the other players and the casino itself, the dealer needs to know how to handle that kind of player. The dealer is almost like a referee. They are there to facilitate the game, but they don't want to be part of the action. They have to know when it's time to call a floor person over for help.
3. Handling payouts
The dealer is responsible for reading the table correctly so he or she knows who won the pot and/or how much the winner should be paid. They shouldn't have to glance down at a pay table every time they make a payout. They need to know how to award the winner and when it's necessary to split a pot. Cashing someone out or cashing someone into the game also needs to be done in a timely fashion. Serious players hate dead action at the table.
2. Call a good game
The dealer needs to be able to read the action at the table and announce it clearly to everyone that's playing, especially important in baccarat. In poker, you need to announce the amount someone is betting or raising and you need to do it without much hesitation. The people playing don't always keep their full attention on what's going on at the table so this is a good way to keep them informed.
1. Interact with the players
Like it or not, we're in the hospitality and entertainment business so being personable and engaging is important. The player has a choice as to where he or she wants to play so it's important to make sure the player has a good time. We teach our dealers to always smile, have a good disposition and a good personality. It's one of the most important attributes for a dealer. When a player comes to the table the dealer should really do all they can to welcome them. You'd be surprised how often a casino patron goes into a casino and looks for a certain dealer. A dealer can create loyalty. That's good for everyone involved – from the dealer to the player to the casino. It makes it a win-win for everyone."

JokeTime:
At a posh Las Vegas casino, a blackjack dealer and a player with a 13 count in his hand are arguing about whether or not it is appropriate to tip the dealer. The player says, "When I get bad cards, it's not the dealer's fault. Accordingly, when I get good cards, the dealer obviously has nothing to do with that either, so why should I tip him?"
The dealer replies, "When you eat at a restaurant do you tip the waiter?"
"Yes," the gambler concedes.
"Well then, he serves you food; whether it's good or bad isn't up to him. By the same token, I'm serving you cards, so you should tip me."
"OK," says the gambler, "but the waiter gives me what I ask for. I'll take an 8."

That's all for now.  I hope you get dealt a Royal flush.  Remember Santa's coming soon!

And on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you can get our famous, juicy, 28-day dry-aged burger for only $5. For a few dollars more you can add a salad or french fries. But any way you bite it, it's not just the best burger at the casino, it's the best bargain, too. Thursday, Friday and Saturday only 12pm – 4pm. Call 860-312-8753 for reservations.

For a literal breath of fresh air, a 1.9-mile trail leads through the woods to the Mashantucket Museum & Research Center (Wed-Sat 9 a.m.-5 p.m., adults $15, 55 and up $13, 6-15 $10) where exhibits detail the natural history of the area as well as the history and culture of the nation that owns the casino. There is also a shuttle bus between the casino and the museum.
If it's a walk inside you're looking for after that big buffet, try a walk from the farthest end of Foxwoods all the way to MGM and back.  You might want to reward yourself with either Junior's Cheesecake on your way back or stop in at Gelato Cafe and treat your sweet tooth to the silky, smooth, luscious flavors of handcrafted Italian-style ice cream – 24 flavors to be exact.
Then, you might have to do that power walk all over again!  Yummm....

Tuesday Tidbits

Random stuff concerning New England Gambling, US Gambling, and gambling in general.

  • In this year’s election news, the biggest election-day casino issue was in Maryland which approved the addition of table games at its casinos, including a sixth resort that will be built near Washington D.C. As we remember in New England, table games were also approved for Rhode Island’s Twin River slot parlor, but were declined for the Newport Grand. And, a measure to escalate a casino presence in Oregon was defeated.

  • Ever get "free slot play?" Ever play just the free slot play, then leave? Well, consider this.  Whatever your playing status (card tier) is - low, mid to high roller status - casino management looks at all of your play statistics - time played, denomination, bet amount, games - high or low house advantage - and time away (for example, Mohegan Sun looks at last 6 visits). If your "free slot play" only visit isn't incorporated in your usual amount of play, it may decrease your perks and your tier-status. Something to keep in mind on those days you go to eat and play your free slot play and leave, damaging your player rating!  Not that I would know, I mean, so I've heard.....

  • Frank Scoblete, well known gambling author and teacher, gives the following suggestions about protecting your money in a casino - Men should never keep their wallets in their back pockets. Get a shirt with a pocket in front that buttons and keep your money in there. Some savvy craps players even keep a “dummy” wallet in their back pockets.  Women should never put your purse on the floor, or on the drink shelf that surrounds the craps table at thigh level, or between slot machines. Doing so is an invitation to long-armed thieves. Keep your purse wrapped securely around your shoulder, on your lap covered by your arm, or keep it in your hands. The bottom line is to make the thief realize that it is going to take quite an effort to dislodge you from your purse. Both sexes can protect their money by using a secure fanny pack or waist pack.

You can find more of Frank’s teachings at his site http://www.gamblingteachers.com.

  • Promotion - Shop & Dine Anywhere at Mohegan Sun w/ a $25 Gift Card and $15 in Free Slot Play for $25 ($40 Value) Limit 1 per person, per Player's Club card. Voucher expires December 31, 2012. From ReferLocal. http://tinyurl.com/b76kqym

  • A Doctor Poker Player - A doctor answers his phone and hears the familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line. "We need a fourth for poker," said the friend. "I'll be right over," whispered the doctor. As he was putting on his coat, his wife asked, "Is it serious?" "Oh yes, quite serious," said the doctor gravely. "In fact, there are three doctors there already!"

  • Finally, a Casino Myth from Frank Scoblete:   Casinos are not interested in low rollers. To get comps, you have to bet big money.   If you play the machines, even for quarters, you aren’t as low a roller as you think you are. Put three quarters in a machine every five seconds and you are putting through $540 per hour. Play four hours and you just gambled $2,160 -- wow! The casinos will be more than happy to recognize such action with free or discounted rooms, meals and other special promotions. If you play table games, you might not want to be a five-dollar bettor looking for comps in a casino where they only rate $25 action. However, there are plenty of casinos that will gladly comp five-dollar players if they play long enough. The bottom line is this: Most casinos want just about all players. Find the places that give your action the most in perks as possible...and then patronize them.

That's all for now.  A-K-Q-J-10 all diamonds.  Diamonds aren't just a girl's best friend!

Maine Monday

MAINE CASINOS

HOLLYWOOD CASINO, HOTEL & RACEWAY
NEWS
They'll soon be rolling the dice at the Hollywood Casino in Bangor, Maine.

AP reports that the casino is adding craps to its offering of gambling options beginning Friday. The casino has had slot machines since it opened as Maine's first casino in 2005, and added blackjack, poker and roulette earlier this year. General Manager John Osborne says customers have been asking that craps be added to the mix, but the casino doesn't have enough craps dealers for the table to operate daily. That could change next year after a new round of table games operators completes training courses at Eastern Maine Community College.

Craps will officially debut at 5 p.m. Friday and will be open to play from 5 p.m. to closing on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hollywood also expects this to be the best year ever as they continue to offer new table games. As of now, they offer Poker, Blackjack, 3 card poker, Texas Hold 'em, and Roulette. After a slight dip in revenue last year, they expect to be more than 3 million more than last year.

HOLLYWOOD PROMOTIONS
  • WIN Free Slot Play - December 22  - Don't miss out on the first four Saturdays of December for your chance to win! Hollywood will be giving away a share of $2,500 Free Slot Play on December 1, 8, 15, & 22. Simply play with your Club Hollywood card from 3-8pm on each date to qualify. Visit Player Services for complete details.
  • Win $100 Free Slot Play! - December 26 - We'll end our 12 Days of Winter with a poke or a pinch, to an ugly sweater wearer chosen by our Hollywood Grinch! Come into Hollywood wearing your ugliest holiday sweater on December 26 for your chance to win. Visit Player Services for complete details.
OXFORD CASINO
Meanwhile, The Oxford Casino in Maine is on the verge of receiving final approval from the state’s Gambling Control Board for an expanded gambling area in the casino. While the final decision hasn’t been meted down yet, the casino is optimistic that he approval will pass, allowing it to add more table games and slot machines on the casino floor to add to the current gambling options – 529 slot machines and 12 table games – the Oxford Casino already has in its fold.

That's all for now.  May all your flushes be royal.

Hug Your Children, Tell them you love them....

...is so important now, after the tragedy in Newtown, CT.  Do it tonight, do it now, call your loved ones, because life seems so fleeting when these things happen to us, and much too often.  And when I say "us" I mean all of us - whether we live 2 miles from Sandy Hook, or 2000 miles.

I am a teacher of 35 years and when I left school today, I heard the horror on the radio.  All I could feel was heartache for the victims - then I thought about the students I had just left and my grandchildren getting home from their school.  An overwhelming helplessness came over me.

This blog will be taking a few days off.  It seems so insignificant to write about casino news during this tragey in New England.   Our hearts and prayers go out to all those unfortunately touched by this deep hardship in Newtown, CT.

So, hug your loved ones - don't wait, do it now.

Casino News in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Round-up

The process for three / four casino sites in Massachusetts continues, although to some, at a snail's pace. The winner of a lone casino license in Western Massachusetts will be determined on merit to the company that can best deliver on its promises.

Below is part of an article by Howard Stutz's Inside Gaming column  which appears Sundays in the Las Vegas Review Journal.  He blogs at lvrj.com/blogs/stutz. Follow @howardstutz on Twitter.

"A month ago, Penn National and MGM Resorts spent a combined $90 million and were on opposite sides of what might have been the most expensive and venomous casino expansion campaign ever seen in Maryland.  What MGM and Penn need to avoid is another Maryland, where Question 7 passed by a 52 percent to 48 percent vote. MGM Resorts, which supported the gaming expansion measure, is expected to be awarded a license to build a casino in suburban Maryland.  Penn National opposed the measure because the company believed it should be awarded the gaming license. Also, a new casino in Maryland would take customers from the company's West Virginia casino.  Did MGM cross the line?  Inundating the Springfield airwaves with millions of dollars in ads, mailing controversial documents to residents and questioning a company's financial acumen or intentions won't be tolerated.  In fact, Springfield leaders reportedly told officials from both MGM and Penn to play nice.

But for the moment, the focus is now on MGM Resorts and Penn National.

Now, they are facing off in Western Massachusetts in what is the most heavily sought after license among the state's three potential gaming regions. Western Massachusetts drew six prospects. Both MGM and Penn have made inroads in Springfield. MGM promises to refurbish a city playground near its casino site and to use the gaming facility to bring additional business to two municipal golf courses.  MGM Resorts and Penn National are focused on Springfield, which bills itself as a cultural center.  MGM Resorts is planning an $800 million casino on 10 to 15 acres at the city's south side. Penn National wants to build an $807 million casino on the city's north end.  Also on the table are separate proposals from two local developers in the town of Holyoke and a pitch by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, operators of the Mohegan Sun Casino, which has a site in Palmer.

In the other areas of the state, Caesars Entertainment Corp. - in partnership with the Suffolk Downs Raceway - seemingly has a lock on the Boston-area license, although a late entry of Wynn Resorts Ltd. could muddy the waters.  And, in the southeast, the license appears headed to a Massachusetts Indian tribe, though the process could reopen if the tribe can't get it's financing in order.

Hundreds of Springfield residents are expected to pack a public meeting to hear from two companies seeking to build casinos in the western Massachusetts city.  MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming Inc. were scheduled to make presentations and take questions at the meeting on Tuesday night.
Mayor Domenic Sarno is expected to decide sometime early next year whether to negotiate a host community agreement with one or both of the remaining developers."

So the Bay State battles for casinos has begun.  The expected completion is sometime around 2016.  I guess we'll have plenty of news until then.  I'll try to keep you posted we journey through.  That's all for now.

More Mass Casino News

Let the courtships begin!

NECN says it's not quite like David & Goliath, but I do think it's close. It would be a similar situation if Boyd took on MGM for a particular important property on the strip - Boyd Gaming being very similar to Penn in it's diverse properties. One has the Vegas glitz - and the name, MGM, a Fortune 500 company with 62,000 employees. The other is from Pennsylvania, called Penn National Gaming which has opened 3 new casinos this year. Its proposal is called Hollywood Springfield, similar to the Hollywood Hotel, Casino & Raceway in Bangor, Maine. Hollywood Springfield would be a more grand scale, I would believe. A little closer look at the two proposals follows:

Penn National has 24 casinos in the United States, so it is not quite David to MGM's Goliath. Penn National and local partner Peter A. Picknelly, chairman and CEO of Peter Pan Bus Lines, propose a resort casino and hotel on 13.4 acres in the North End, which includes bus company property. Penn National said Tuesday it wants to include regionally-themed restaurants, including a sports bar involving retired quarterback Doug Flutie.

MGM Resorts International proposes a resort casino, hotel and entertainment complex on a 10-block site downtown. MGM said it would include retail shops and apartments, and take advantage of existing tourism spots in Springfield to compete with the entertainment complexes of Connecticut casinos. MGM also said its project would create thousands of new jobs.

The Request for Proposals is due Jan. 3. The city has a month to review, and it will then likely be put on a ballot. Mayor Domenic Sarno is expected to decide early next year whether to negotiate a host community agreement with one or both of the developers.

And remember, a casino isn't coming to Springfield for certain - there are other bids too in Holyoke and Palmer. The company that emerges from the Springfield competition will likely have to compete locally with Uncasville, Conn., casino company Mohegan Sun, which is seeking a resort casino in the town of Palmer.  Recently, the Mayor of Holyoke rescinded his intentions for the casino consideration.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will make the final decision on the western Massachusetts operating license, one of three regional licenses allowed under the state's year-old casino law.  With Ameristar pulling out in Springfield, and Holyoke seemingly not interested, the numbers are dwindling.

My crystal ball tells me the following prediction.  The three casinos will be (drum roll).....
  1. Wampanoag Tribe in the Southeast area - while others are being permitted to submit bids again, the Wampanoags will get there act together and get the bid
  2. Caesar's(Harrah's) in Boston area - rumor has it, it's the leader by far, even with Steve Wynn's late presence
  3. MGM in the western area - those voting will not see past MGM's reputation and money, leaving Penn National left out.  Mohegan Sun has a great spot in place that needs economic development, but I think the powers to be would prefer Springfield to Palmer - it's just "glitzier."

That's all for now. May all your flushes be royal.

(Feature) Top 5 Most Anticipated Games of 2013

2013 approaches fast and offers a vast range of fantastic titles for gamers to enjoy. Here is my personal pick of my (5) most anticipated games it has to offer!

Grand Theft Auto 5

Why it made my list: Is there much explanation needed here?
While not my most anticipated game of the 2013, it has certainly got me, and many others, excited. It is Grand Theft Auto - what is not to look forward to?

In all honesty, Grand Theft Auto IV didn't massively impress me, however if GTA V manages to fix most of the issues I had with its predecessor it is guaranteed to be a sensational game.

Tomb Raider

Why it made my list: I liked the old Tomb Raider. I have great memories of playing it on PS2 and Xbox 360 and it wasn't until Uncharted came along that there was anything that really rivaled it. It was never perfect, but always fun and great to play; however the success of Uncharted certainly brought about hard times for the long lasting series and it isn't surprising to see it getting a make over.

While I'm still slightly skeptical about some of the gameplay features, Tomb Raider looks to be a sensational adventure. It touches on a mature darkness that wasn't expected from such a previously 'friendly' series.

Lara is still as attractive as ever, but it is no longer focused around how sexy or 'cool' she is and wild her adventures. Instead it is about her struggles to survive on a tropical island full of scummy mercenaries and troubling puzzles. It has, in a way, grown up.

It looks to be a highlight of next year - for me at least - offering a totally story focused experience that could, if successful, reinvent Lara Croft and Tomb Raider for good.

Bioshock Infinite

Why it made my list: In a way Rapture is BioShock and BioShock is Rapture. That is why my first thought was of how dangerous the change in setting was for BioShock Infinite. However, after considering the dreary sequel that was BioShock 2, it's impossible not to fully support 2K's aim to move forward with the series.

Just like GTA V, BioShock Infinite doesn't really need a full explanation of why it made my list. To anyone who has played the series and loved it: this choice probably seems obvious.

Set up in the clouds in a magical city; BioShock Infinite looks to take the player on an epic a journey as the first installment in the series did. A strong story, character line up and, most of all, an incredible world, looks to be the focal point of Infinite.

If executed properly, the game could easily be one of the best next year has to offer. Either way, it has been delayed enough times to warrant this. Let us hope it performs.

Metro: Last Light

Why it made my list: It was thrilling to learn Metro 2033 would receive a sequel; although surprising to say the least. Being such a budget game and carrying its fair share of flaws, it seemed unlikely to produce a follow on. It has, however, in the form of Metro: Last Light.

Despite the fact the first Metro game was based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's first Metro book; 4A Games have, along with the help of Glukhovsky, taken the different angle of basing it on a story unique to the game.

The reason Last Light is one of my most anticipated games of 2013 is simply because if it is anywhere as good - if not better - than 2033, it could easily be one of the best successes of next year.

Story driven, scary, intriguing, unique and very Russian, Last Light is based a year after Metro 2033 (in 2034) and follows the original games main protagonist Artyom. Little is known about the story or the game as a whole, but 4A Games appear to have introduced many new features and fixed old bugs.

If there is one game to keep a look out for next year that may slip under anyone's raider, this has got to be it.

The Last of Us

Why it made my list: While Microsoft hopes to impress with Gears of War: Judgment, Sony have something else up their sleeve. To say The Last of Us looks great or even amazing is an understatement; it looks in-cre-dible.

Naughty Dog created one of my favourite ever series with Uncharted and look to push the boat out even further with this.

Set in post-apocolypic America, The Last of Us follows two characters, Joel and Ellie, as they try to survive in a seemingly doomed world. While it offers apocalyptic cliché’s; like an American military you can't trust, dodgy quarantine zones and basically typical regimes you see in many films of the same genre; to portray this in a game is something sensational. This setting may be a common sight in horror films, but never has a game treaded in this territory.

Cliché’s aside, the story looks sensational and characterisation could possibly be some of the best anyone has seen in a game. The Last of Us doesn't just push the boat out with the story, characters, setting and atmosphere, either; the gameplay looks to be different and very much 'choice' based - as does the entire game itself.

Quite like other games on this list, there isn't a whole lot of info known about The Last of Us. However it looks to have potential to be one of the most incredible games, not just of next year, but also of this generation.

Others to look forward to

The are loads of awesome games being released in 2013 and it was hard to pick the 5 I'm anticipating most. Below are a few other games I'm really looking forward to that didn't quite make the cut for my Top 5 list!

  • Gears of War: Judgement

  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist

  • Crysis 3

  • Dead Space 3

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines

  • Lost Planet 3
Don't forget to put in the comments what your most anticipated games of the upcoming year are!

(Feature) 2012 - Games of The Year

2012 has been a sensational year for gaming. Here is my own personnel pick of the best and most disappointing games of the year. Please note that lists are in no particular order.

Top 5 Games of The Year

Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
Witcher 2 easily takes its place on my list of best games of the year.

There are few games that engage you in such an interesting and mature story and characters like Witcher 2 does. It's these elements that can make or break games and it is great so much effort was put into this game to ensure it succeeded in these areas.

While not being perfect, Witcher 2 involves the player in a miraculous world with astounding attention to detail. The combat system was a little hit and miss but the successes of everything else the game offers way out way any cons there might be.

Arguably you have to be a hardcore RPG fan to get the most out of this game, although I would beg to differ. I'm not a dedicated RPG player, yet Witcher 2 thrilled, intrigued and touched me.

If there is one game that likely slipped through peoples radars this year that shouldn't; this may be it.

Catherine
Catherine is the type of game that is so unexpected it's hard what to make of it at first.
Essentially it is a sort of 'role-playing platformer' - although even that description far from hits the nail on the head.
In a way the best description would be to simply say that it is one hell of a messed up emotional rollercoaster.

I wasn't too keen on the platforming parts of the game at first; I preferred the interesting conversations and text talks with friends part of the game to be honest. However, as the game went on I realised that Vincent's nightmares played such an important part not only in the story, but in understanding things that I put more effort into them and, as a result; my liking for those gameplay segments increased.

It's a wicked and harsh game that really brought something so unique and different and, in its own way, fun, to the table, it is impossible not to love this game.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)
The odd one out on the list because it is the only handheld game I've included; NSMB2 for the 3DS proved that 2D Mario is triumphant over 3D Mario (on the 3DS at least). Indeed; Mario's 3D Land outing last year left me far from overly satisfied.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is an awesome game though, and proves the Italian plumber is far from getting old.

This entry remained exactly what fans know and love while still offering a few different takes on things. New levels, power ups and a large focus on coins; NSMB2 is easy to put on this list because it is just such an entertaining game. It never fails to amuse just like almost all Mario games. That deserves something.

Spec Ops: The Line

There have been many great games released this year and it was hard to come to a final decision on whether Spec Ops deserved a place. It isn't perfect. In fact, if I were asked to 'rate it' I wouldn't give it above an 8.5 out of 10.
So how come it beat ingenious games like Dishonored and got a place here then?
Any person reading this has the right to ask that and, while I understand my justification, it is likely many won't agree. That is fine, however. An opinion is n opinion.

Spec Ops: The Line is a special game. It may have a dreary multiplayer mode, average pacing and a questionable lack of unique fights in the singleplayer; but it has an intriguing psychological twist to it that will have any gamer really wondering what the hell is going on.

The story becomes confusing and weird, violent and scary; but that is the whole point. The game confuses with its surreal ability to make you actually question not just the characters but yourself. The confusion felt is not because the plot line is hard to follow; more that who you or your characters are anymore is near impossible to work out.

There were many times throughout the game when I thought I'd missed the point. It is, in fact, the missing of the point that is the point.

Spec Ops takes its well-deserved place on my list for being so damn thought provoking and emotionally brilliant.

Far Cry 3
There are many reasons to praise Far Cry 3. It's fairly deep, mature and unique story. The island it is set on. The characters or combat. In the end if it weren't for all these things beings as top notch as they are; the game wouldn't be as good.

While the story and characters (mainly the two main enemies) weren't done to full potential, it still offered a far better plot than most other games released.

Exploring Rook Island and completing missions while learning more about the cast of characters was a sensational experience. Few games hooked me like Far Cry 3 did and, I imagine, I will still be playing it next year.

Ubisoft got a lot spot on with Far Cry 3. There really are few games anything like this one.

Top 5 Arcade Games of The Year (360/PS3)

Fez
Fez is an excellent example of how and by the Xbox 360 is a sensational arcade console as well as being a hardcore one.

Fez is difficult, intriguing and beautiful to look at. Using various camera angles to make the experience more complex and unique is something other games have explored; few, however, implement them in such a sensational way as Fez.

Being an arcade title it's not likely a ton of people bought it upon release; so it is safe, then, to assume there are still people left to play it. To those people I say: put down Call of Duty and Far Cry 3 and get this game. I know there are many amazing games I've recommended (and will recommend); but Fez is a cheap, excellent addition to any gamers arcade library.

Journey
Journey is breath taking. A simple concept perfectly executed.

It isn't that Journey is astoundingly fun per say; or totally full of content. There is no blasting other players away online or killing thousands of people. It is just a magical, unique and totally awe inspiring game.

While travelling through a desert towards the objective, the player is often joined by other people playing the game and must work together to succeed. With no words spoken or typed, the game relies on a unique 'song' system that allows players to communicate via in game sounds.

It's an astonishing experience and one that is far from forgotten after completing.

Walking Dead
Telltale successfully made the Walking Dead actually interesting with the arcade episode releases.

Being point and click and based on a mediocre (in my opinion) TV series I didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised to find, then, that they had actually produced something rather fantastic.

Story driven and interesting; the Walking Dead arcade series really impressed me. It's hard to fault the obvious dedication and awesome results Telltale produced.
Each episode was eagerly awaited and it really felt not only like a 'TV' series was being watched but truly participated in and, most of all, dictated by the player.

Trials Evolution
The whole Trials format is basic. You can find online games that can be played for free that offer the same gameplay basis. However, it is what RedLynx does with that format that makes the Trials series so frigging awesome.

Trials Evolution gives players exactly what they want: a fun challenge.
Awesome levels and a basic, yet outstanding and enjoyable gameplay system will leave any player satisfied.

Some would say that Trials is the bet arcade series around and while I would disagree, Evolution is extremely awesome and not to be missed.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare
I absolutely adored the first Alan Wake and was really interested to find out what this indirect sequel would be like.

American Nightmare isn't a straightforward follow on to the first game and is more of a 'spin off'. I didn't quite like the concept at first and just wanted a straight forward sequel; however AWAN succeeded in being a really enjoyable, content packed, experience and, most of all, it was more Alan Wake - which isn't a bad thing.

The game suffers from story issues and returning flaws from the first game as well as offering an awesome side mode that doesn't include multiplayer or co-op(?). However it is a long, action packed experience that is great fun. Given that it is a cheaper arcade release that could almost be released as a full game as well as being really enjoyable, Alan Wake gets well deserved place on my list.

Top 5 Most Disappointing Games of The Year

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Despite still being a good game, the sequel to one of my most disappointing games ever (Black Ops); Black Ops 2 disappointed me on a more personal level.

It failed to excite me upon playing and, unfortunately, failed also to get me back into the series that first got me into gaming. There isn't much to else to say about BLOPs 2 except it let me down for my on gaming reasons rather than ones that can be picked apart technically.

Resident Evil 6
What has happened to you Resi? You hit such a high note with number 5 and then you come out with this? It isn't so much that Resi 6 completely sucked; just that compared to what was expected it was a disappointment. This list isn't compiled of the worst games of the year, only the ones that disappointed me, so Resi 6 isn't a terrible game; just a let down.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter
After the last Medal of Honor offered a good experience with potential, I fully expected Danger Close to produce a great game here. Instead, MoH: Warfighter came in the form of a mush of mediocre gameplay and graphics, a bland mission selection and a multiplayer boring enough to make a caffeine addict go to sleep.

Ninja Gaiden 3
What on earth were you thinking, Team Ninja?

Ninja Gaiden 3 is an appalling follow on to a series that had a lot going for it. I don't even know what to say here as almost everything about the game sucked and disappointed. That's all anyone needs to know. Don't play it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified
I hoped maybe Declassified could offer a really unique and awesome experience and truly be the best handheld console FPS yet. It wasn't. At all.

Disappointing? Yes. Utterly rubbish? Yes. Complete confusion over just what went wrong? Yes.

When playing this game, instead of thinking how awesome it was, I couldn't get this though out my head: how do you screw a game up so much? If being this bad and disappointing was an Olympic sport and Declassified had been released before London 2012, it would've won gold. Fact.

I don't want to even waste more words on this thing. Bottom line: avoid it like the plague.

Seems my lists are done. It is unlikely many will agree with them so voice your own opinions on what were your best and worst games of 2012 in the comments!
